On an autumn day in 1816, just before two o’clock in the afternoon, a huge crowd of locals, society ladies and grandees gathered at Leith harbour to witness the sensation of an Inuit stowaway demonstrating his spectacular kayaking skills, including racing single against six men in a whaleboat, and winning with ease.
