Interview: Jason Burnett on the art and science of crafting a custom-made surfboard

0
There ain’t no surf in Portobello, as The Valves sang in 1977, but there was a surfboard exhibition just up the road in Leith last week, courtesy of east coast shaper Jason Burnett. In the white cube-ish exhibition space at Custom Lane, just off Commercial Street, Burnett had six of his hand-crafted creations suspended from the ceiling by wires, and he was also showcasing some of the artworks he makes from leftover polyester resin, one of the substances used in the board-making process: sculptures, bowls and even a psychedelic table-top, each one a unique product of the same strange alchemy that gives surfboards their luminous, waterproof finish.
