Thunders Rocknroll Wins Lady Slipper Stakes; Sir Sterling upset winner in 10,000 Lakes; Gallardo rides stakes double

Jockey Eduardo Gallardo rode both winners in a pair of $50,000 stakes Saturday at Canterbury Park. He guided favorite Thunders Rocknroll to a gate to wire win in the Lady Slipper Stakes, fighting off two challenges through fast fractions, eventually winning by two lengths. In the next race he found the front in the 10,000 Lakes Stakes on Sir Sterling at 15 to 1 odds after dueling with Thealligatorhunter and holding off odds-on betting choice Doctor Oscar to win by a half-length.

Thunders Rocknroll, owned and bred by Bob Lindgren, is trained by Jon Arnett. She paid $3.20 to win and covered six furlongs in 1:11.45. “She’s a star. She’s the best horse I’ve ever had,” Lindgren said. Lover Girl finished second in the Lady Slipper and She’s My Warrior was third.

Sir Sterling

Sir Sterling, $33.20, was bred by his owner Chad Kuehn. Tony Rengstorf is the trainer. “When he’s on the front turning for home, he’s game,” Rengstorf said. Final time for the six furlongs was 1:10.46.

Gallardo had not ridden since June 1. He was injured that night when he was kicked in the thigh by a horse following a winner’s circle photo. Although able to ride two races after the incident, he removed himself from his mounts the next afternoon. Gallardo was second leading rider last season at Canterbury.

Gallardo closed out the card winning the final race aboard Cowboy Cause.
