Chris Lindauer named as women’s swimming & diving head coach
Stanford announced Chris Lindauer as the Paul A. Violich Director of Women’s Swimming on Thursday afternoon. The former Notre Dame head coach will take on the daunting task of leading the 12-time national-champion program. The appointment makes Lindauer the eighth head coach in the program’s history.
The move follows the April 11 resignation of Greg Meehan, who left after 13 seasons to become USA Swimming’s National Team managing director. Meehan’s tenure produced three straight NCAA titles from 2017-19 and a dominant 87-7 dual-meet record.
Lindauer spent the past three seasons guiding both Notre Dame’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. His men placed a program-record 10th at the 2024 NCAA championships, and his athletes throughout his coaching career have captured 10 individual NCAA crowns and earned 95 All-America honors. Lindauer has also helped produce 13 Olympians. His coaching accolades earned him a spot on the 2024 U.S. Olympic coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Before arriving in South Bend, the Westminster, Colo., native logged 13 seasons at Louisville, rising to associate head coach. The Cardinals posted simultaneous top-five NCAA finishes in 2019 and won their first ACC men’s title in 2021. Lindauer’s ties to Louisville run deep as he swam collegiately for the Cardinals, claiming four Big East titles before graduating in 2008.
Stanford’s roster returns 76.7 percent of the 197 individual points that fueled a 417-point runner-up finish at the 2025 NCAA championships, second only to champion Virginia. The returning athletes include Olympic gold medalist Torri Huske, who will be leaving the Cardinal with more returning points than any team outside Virginia. The minimal change to the team roster will be key for a program still adjusting to the transition to the ACC.
Lindauer’s hiring will be official following the finalization of a background check.
