[Swimming & Diving] SAU wins home quad to open 2021-22 season

St. Ambrose won its season-opening SAU Quad Friday at the Davenport Central High School Natatorium. The Bees totaled 1548.5 points. The men earned 1013 points, the most among all four teams, and the SAU women earned 535.5 points, finishing second to Olivet Nazarene. Midland and Morningside also competed.

Juan Gomez won three individual events. He took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.97, the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.69, and the 1000 free in 10:02.33.

Gomez was also part of the Bees' 1-2-3 finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Mikhi Hassim won the event in a time of 52.97 seconds. Rais Hassim was second in 53.00 seconds and Gomez took third in 53.10.

Rais Hassim won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.65 and was runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.85 seconds.

Brett Jones was second in a pair of events - the 50-yard freestyle (21.51) and the 100 free (47.76). Teammate Caleb Heiar was right behind, placing third in both events. Victor Del Rio Foces, Zac Robinson and Ryan Warrick helped St. Ambrose take second through sixth in the 50 free.

Quincy Walker's time of 54.47 seconds was good for second in the 100-yard backstroke.

Bram Mess won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 153.95.

SAU also excelled in the relays. Quincy Walker, Rais Hassim, Mikhi Hassim and Warrick won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.55. Jones, Warrick, Rais Hassim and Heiar were first in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:25.82, and Gomez, Warrick, Heiar and Leo Edwards reached the wall in a first-place time of 3:13.99 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Del Rio Foces, Robinson, Reece Powell and Jaden Dydell took third in the 200 free relay, and Jones, Rais Hassim, Robinson and Del Rio Foces were third in the 400 free relay.

Leyre Antonanzas led the St. Ambrose by winning two individual events. She won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:18.99, and her time of 1:00.78 was .01 better than the second-place finisher in the 100-yard backstroke. Antonanzas added a second-place effort in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.06.

Lauren Williams took third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.27 and Molly Duehr finished third in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.02 seconds.

Andrea Adam won the women's 1-meter dive with 251.20 points.

Antonanzas was also part of two third-place relay teams. She led off the 200-yard medley relay team that finished in 1:54.43. She was followed by Valentina Espinosa, Bethany Anderson and Williams. Then Williams, Antonanzas, Anderson and Rylie Steinkamp took third in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:49.61.

The SAU swimming & diving team returns to action next Friday at Lewis University.
