[Swimming & Diving] Bees get season underway at Lewis University

St. Ambrose got its swimming & diving season underway Saturday with a dual at Lewis University.

And the Bees got off to a great start, picking up points from a variety of individuals.

Reece Powell won the men's 50-yard butterfly in a time of 23.89 seconds. Quincy Walker (24.18 seconds) and Khalil Ruiz (25.88) also scored in the event.

St. Ambrose had several runner-up finishes. Zac Robinson was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.17 seconds. Powell was third and Keagan Dolphin took fifth. Rais Hassim's time of 48.54 seconds was good for second in the 100-yard freestyle. Leo Edwards was third and Dolphin also scored for SAU.

Walker was the runner-up in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 25.23 seconds. Josh Hay was fourth and Garret Sims finished fifth. William Walker-Rozo was second in the 200-yard individual medley. His time was 2:03.24. Gabe Carlson and Isaac Garcia added points in the event.

Also scoring for the St. Ambrose men:
200-yard freestyle: Nathan Kuszynski, Edwards, Ryan Joehl
500-yard freestyle: Justin Fales, Grant Nelson, Walker-Rozo
1000-yard freestyle: Nelson, Fales
100-yard backstroke: Walker, Joehl, Kuszynski
100-yard breaststroke: Caleb Gaylor, Carlson, Carmelo Patti II
100-yard butterfly: Gaylor, Hassim

The Bee men also did well in the relays. Gaylor, Powell, Robinson and Hassim won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:26.46. Dolphin, Kuszynski, Joehl and Fales finished second in 1:30.56.

Joehl, Gaylor, Hassim and Robinson took second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:40.02, while Walker, Carlson, Powell and Dolphin were right behind in third place in 1:40.64.

Kelly Baughman picked up a first-place finish for the St. Ambrose women. Her time of 27.58 seconds was good enough to win the 50-yard butterfly. Catie Schimmelpfenning and Danielle Gail Juco also earned points in the 50 fly.

Bethany Anderson was one of several Bee women to get a second-place finish. She was second to touch the wall in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.15. Baughman was third in 1:04.41.

Emily Hartman was the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:47.67. She was also third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.49. Delaney Janosek and Molly Sullivan scored points for SAU in the 500 and 200, respectively.

Valentina Espinosa and Molly Sullivan earned points in both the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststroke. Espinosa's effort of 34.05 seconds was good for second in the 50. Sullivan placed fourth in the 50 and also took second in the 100 in 1:12.44. Victoria Thorne scored in the 100-yard breaststroke.

100-yard freestyle: Shoop, Hartman, Brooklyn Pottebaum
50-yard backstroke: Caitlin Pieroni, Maddie LaGrange
100-yard backstroke: Anderson, Pieroni, LaGrange
200-yard individual medley: Pieroni, Espinosa, Lily Barraza

SAU also got second-place finishes in both women's relays.

Anderson, Pottebaum, Shoop and Hartman teamed for a time of 1:48.62 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Schimmelpfenning, Janosek, Baughman and Jennifer Thomas took third.

Anderson, Espinosa, Baughman and Shoop were second in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:56.34.

Lewis took both duals, winning the men's competition 139-114 and winning the women's 149-93.

The Bees will next compete at Truman State on Saturday, Oct. 31.
