Game Recap: Nimmo Homers Twice as Mets Fry Marlins, 6-0

0 16

The Mets beat the Marlins 6-0 today at First Data field, snapping the Marlins 11-game winning streak. Keon Broxton ended the game with a diving catch stranding the bases loaded. (Box Score)

Pitching

With Opening Day one week away, the Met sent Steven Matz out to right the ship. The lefty had a scoreless first inning with three ground ball outs. In the second inning, Matz got 3 fly ball outs. In both innings, Matz worked around a single in each of those innings.

In the third, Matz surrendered a hit to Martin Prado and hit Brian Anderson but struck out Lewis Brinson to get out of the inning. Matz worked around a double in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Matz gave up a single to Miguel Rojas but maneuvered out of it with help to Wilson Ramos. He started the sixth but only faced one batter, his final line read: 5+ IP, 6 H, 0 R. 0 BB, 3 K.

Tyler Bashlor came on for Matz and with an inherited runner. He got a ground ball but a J.D. Davis throwing error did not help matters. He got his way out of it though and even got Peter O’Brien to strikeout.

The seventh went to Edwin Diaz who got the side out in order. Ryan O’Rourke got the eighth inning and walked a couple of guys but still managed to get out if unscathed.

Arquimedes Caminero started the ninth but walked three guys to load the bases with two-outs. Casey Coleman came in to extinguish the fire.

Offense

The Mets scored five in the second inning thanks to their two young outfielders. Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer off lefty, Wei-Yin Chen. It was Michael’s fourth straight game with a homer.

Chen proceeded to give up a hit to Jeff McNeil and pelted Amed Rosario. Why is everyone hitting Amed with pitches this spring? Brandon Nimmo brought them both home with a three-run homer.

Nimmo gave the Mets their sixth run of the afternoon with a solo home run in the seventh inning. The Mets will need both Conforto and Nimmo to hit like the second half of 2018.

Wilson Ramos went 2-for-3 today, continuing his strong spring. Amed Rosario got on base twice while also playing all nine innings.

On Deck

The Mets play their last split squad games of 2019 on Friday. They play at First Data Field at 1:10 p.m. with left-hander Hector Santiago getting the start. The Mets will also play the Astros in West Palm Beach. That game starts at 6:10 p.m. with Jason Vargas making his final start of the spring.
