[Swimming & Diving] Adam, Taylor and Kuszynski lead SAU at NAIA Championships

NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships | St. Ambrose results

Highlighted by repeat performances from Andrea Adam, Taylor Madison and Nathan Kuszynski, the St. Ambrose men's and women's swimming and diving teams each placed 14th at the NAIA National Championships in Columbus, Ga.

Adam and Madison duplicated their performances from a year ago, finishing first and second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. It marked the third and fourth national titles for Adam, the reigning NAIA Women's Diver of the Year. Kuszynski also added a pair of All-American performances, matching his output from the 2018 Championships.

Thursday, Adam finished with a score of 234.20 to edge Madison in the 1-meter event. The next day, Adam added her second 3-meter championship, finishing with a score of 222.00. Madison was runner-up with a score of 202.90.

Adam was also part of an All-American relay team, teaming with Catie Schimmelpfenning, Dani Crum and Maria Quilty to grab eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:40.18. The Bees finished 22nd in the event last year.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Bethany Anderson, Crum, Quilty and Schimmelpfenning earned points with its 16th-place finish in 3:44.08.

It was heartbreak for the 200-yard medley relay team of Crum, Kelly Baughman, Anderson and Quilty. Their time of 1:56.25 was good for 17th place, just .01 second out of a spot in the B Finals. Schimmelpfenning, Quilty, Anderson and Baughman also just missed scoring points by taking 17th in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:19.39. The 400-yard medley relay team of Crum, Baughman, Anderson and Schimmelpfenning took 22nd place.

In other individual events, the Bees had three competitors in the 50-yard freestyle. Adam placed 22nd, Schimmelpfenning was 37th and Quilty finished 51st. Anderson and Baughman were 37th and 39th, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. Schimmelpfenning was 23rd in the 200-yard freestyle and 33rd in the 100-yard freestyle. Quilty took 35th and 41st in the two events. Anderson (44th) and Crum (52nd) also competed in the 100 free.

For the men, Kuszynski repeated as an All-American in two events. He improved his finish by one spot this year by taking seventh in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:38.35. He added an eighth-place showing in the 1650-yard freestyle. Grabbing All-American honors with a time of 16:15.92.

Kuszynski also scored for St. Ambrose in the 400-yard individual medley. His time of 4:08.59 was good for 14th overall.

Kevin Krupitzer earned points in two individual events. He placed 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.15 seconds and later was 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:09.52. Victor Del Rio Foces placed 14th in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.68 seconds.

SAU finished 12th in three different relays. Kuszynski, Ryan Warrick, Del Rio Foces and Justin Fales teamed for 12th in the 800-yard freestyle relay on the opening day of the Championships. Their time was 7:02.59. Quincy Walker, Krupitzer, Carmelo Patti and Reece Powell took 12th in the 200-yard medley relay in a school-record time of 1:35.11. Patti, Warrick, Powell and Del Rio Foces also took 12th in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:08.90. Del Rio Foces, Patti, Jonathan Whittle and Powell added a 13th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:26.70.

Fales was 19th in the 1650-yard freestyle and 27th in the 500-yard freestyle swims. He was 28th in the 200-yard freestyle, while Powell took 32nd place. Del Rio Foces was 19th in the 100-yard backstroke, with Walker finishing 24th and David Hall taking 30th. Del Rio Foces was also 20th in the 50-yard freestyle, one of six Bees to compete in the event. Patti was 32nd, Warrick 36th, Whittle 37th, Powell 40th and Hall 41st.

Hall added a 24th-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Patti was 26th in the 100-yard butterfly. Walker was 33rd in the 200-yard butterfly. Patti (34th), Warrick (38th), Powell (39th) and Whittle (46th) competed in the 100-yard freestyle.
