0 36

For the fourth straight year, a small-school swimmer has one of the best chances of any area athlete of winning a title at the girls' swimming and diving state championships.

The meet began Friday in Ithaca with diving preliminaries and finals and swimming preliminaries. Swimming finals are Saturday.

Section II has won twice in 41 years, the last time coming in 2011.

After coming close the previous two seasons, Olivia Jack of Scotia won the 100-yard breaststroke last season for her first state championship. This year, Alayna Gray of Fonda-Johnstown goes into the meet as the highest-seeded local athlete.

Gray is seeded second in the 50-yard freestyle. Sydney Sorbello of Bethlehem is seeded third in the same event.
