[Swimming & Diving] Bees add dual victories over Simpson
St. Ambrose grabbed another dual victory Saturday as the Bees defeated Simpson College at Davenport Central. The women won 148-45 and the men won 191-66.
The SAU women had first-place finishes in 11 of 13 events.
Bethany Anderson took first in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.53) and 100-yard butterfly (1:03.60). Shraddha Sudhir took second to her teammate in the 200 free in a time of 2:10.08. Sudhir won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:08.46 and was part of a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle with her second-place time of 5:56.52. Catie Schimmelpfenning had the winning time of 5:35.91.
Deandre Small was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.58 seconds. Mallory Krpan (27.34 seconds), Logan Nemlowill (27.53) and Adyson McKinney (27.63) gave the Bees the top four times in the event.
Nemlowill won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:16.93, and Shelby Thede claimed the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.61. Grace Johanns and Laura Williams placed second and third, respectively.
Johanns also took second in the 1000-yard freestyle. Kelly Baughman was second in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, while Dani Crum took third in the 200 IM.
Defending National Champion Andrea Adam won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Taylor Madison finished second.
Crum, Baughman, Schimmelpfenning and Anderson took the 200-yard medley relay in 1:57.92, while Thede, Nemlowill, McKinney and Krpan were second. St. Ambrose also won the 200-yard freestyle relay as Schimmelpfenning, Crum, Small and Adam teamed for a time of 1:42.90. Krpan, Thede, Williams and Johanns took second.
The Bee men were also dominant, winning nine of 11 events.
Nathan Kuszynski led a swarm of Bees in both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. In the 100 free, his time of 50.06 seconds held off teammates Bryce Hoffer (51.22), Carmelo Patti (51.98), Keagan Dolphin (52.04) and Tristen Hughes (52.47) as SAU had the top five times. In the 100 back, Kuszynski's winning time of 58.75 seconds was better than second-place finisher Ryan Warrick (1:00.88) and third-place finisher Dolphin (1:07.57).
St. Ambrose also had the top four finishers in the 50-yard freestyle. Jonathan Whittle was victorious in 22.35 seconds, while Victor Del Rio Foces (22.41), Kevin Krupitzer (22.72) and Reece Powell (22.75) rounded out the top four. Justin Fales took the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:08.60 while David Hall was second and Jason Schuler third.
Del Rio Foces won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.24 seconds, narrowly edging Patti's second-place time of 56.41 seconds. Krupitzer won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.08 and Sam Sutter took the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:00.07.
Warrick was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle, and Diego Hernandez and Schuler took second and third in the 500-yard freestyle.
SAU also had the top three times in both relays. The 200-yard medley relay team of Del Rio Foces, Krupitzer, Schuler and Powell won in 1:39.47. David Hall, Patti, Josh Fleming and Whittle were second and the team of Noah Hoogestraat, Mitch Berendes, Tyler Finney and Tristen Hughes took third.
Whittle, Fales, Powell and Warrick won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:30.12. Kuszynski, Hughes, Sutter and Zac Robinson were second and Dolphin, Fleming, Hoffer and Berendes were third.
The Bees return to the pool Nov. 16-17 at the Luther Invitational in Decorah, Iowa.
