OPP Officer Adam Belanger Discusses the Upcoming Terry Fox Ride Of Hope

Hello, my name is Adam Belanger. My wife and I have been married for 25 years, and we have three children. We live on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, with Lake Huron and Georgian Bay surrounding this extension of land. I have been a police officer with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) for 25 years. I currently work in the Crime Prevention and Community Support Bureau, coordinating a provincial youth engagement program called The Ride Smart Cycling Education Program. The OPP Ride Smart Program focuses on positive youth engagement and crime prevention through bikes. I am an avid cyclist, enjoying mountain, road, gravel, and fat biking. I have organized and participated in charitable rides across Ontario to support youth, communities, and various causes.

Unfortunately, we have all been impacted by cancer one way or another. I have watched loved ones fight cancer, and win, and watched others lose their life after courageously fighting. When I was a child, I had the privilege of seeing Terry Fox run through Parry Sound. His determination to run across Canada through the adversity of cancer and having only one leg is something that I think of regularly, and it pushes me to put in the effort through life’s adversities. Every time that I am driving in Northern Ontario, I make a point of stopping by the Terry Fox Memorial, just outside of Thunder Bay, to paying my respects. I am continuously encouraged by the legacy he created through his Marathon of Hope.

This June, I will be cycling 7,000kms, coast to coast, with the Terry Fox Foundation, National Ride of Hope Cycling Team. We will complete the ride in 32 days, starting in Vancouver and finishing our EPIC journey in St John’s. We are raising awareness and funds to support the efforts of the Terry Fox Foundation and their cancer cure research. Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope 45 years ago. His effort to make change has moved our nation to come together, finish what Terry started, and find a cure for all cancers.
