Clarification Regarding Equal Opportunities at the Manitoba Games
January 9, 2025
The recent Mountain bike survey results, which were shared publicly, included feedback on the decision to fill reserved female spots with male athletes at the 2024 Manitoba Games in Dauphin, due to insufficient female participation. We understand that this decision has raised concerns, particularly about the potential reinforcement of gender biases.
It was not the intention to suggest that female athletes were displaced to create opportunities for male athletes. The goal was to ensure that all available spots were filled to provide opportunities for youth athletes in general. The decision was made based on the limited number of female participants and the overall objective of the Manitoba Games to include as many athletes as possible.
We recognize that the way this was communicated may not have fully captured the complexity of the situation. We appreciate the ongoing conversation and will continue to work towards providing equal opportunities for all athletes, regardless of gender.
In response to the overall feedback regarding female participation and the female experience in the sport of cycling, we have begun the process of creating a committee dedicated to the promotion of female participation and enhancing their experience in the sport of cycling in Manitoba.
