New Carrollton Safety Walk

WABA is co-hosting a New Carrollton safety walk, Monday evening, September 16, 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, in cooperation with the City of New Carrollton, Prince George’s County Councilmember Eric Olson, and local advocates. Our aims are to boost walking and bicycling in the area and advance creation of safe streets for all.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVP requested so that we can keep you posted about arrangements.

M-NCPPC New Carrollton Downton Access and Connectivity Strategy -- Neighborhoods

New Carrollton is a thriving residential community and commercial destination and a major transportation hub, with an Amtrak and MARC rail station colocated with the New Carrollton Metrorail and bus station. However the community is divided by major roads, by the Capital Beltway and by MD 450/Annapolis Road, a 6-7 lane state highway with dangerous crossings and sidewalkless stretches, signed for bicyclist use of the road despite the heavy vehicle traffic and (routinely broken) 35 MPH speed limit.

The September 16 safety walk will start near the future Purple Line station site on 85th Avenue, near the rail/Metro station. We will proceed along 85th Ave and cross Annaplis Road/MD 450 to the Metro Points Hotel for a short program and discussion opportunity starting at 6 pm. We will then proceed to a nearby location close to the Annapolis Road-Beltway interchange. We will have short discussions at key waypoints along the route.

Note: our route and timings are subject to change. Please register in order to receive updates.
