Campagnolo 8 and 9 speed questions

So today I embarked on my first build from scratch in about a year and I already hit a couple of speed bumps.
Im building up a Bianchi Specialissima. The PO cold set the frame to 130 so I decided to go with 8 speed Record build (1993 group set I think). I have the Ergo shifters but in a nod to this frames pedigree I decided to use a set of Record indexed DT shifters I had stashed. My first speed bump was installing the headset without checking the stack height first. Guess how that worked out? With that lesson learned, I dug out the shifter and popped it on the frame to find that I got 9+ clicks. Looking at the index ring I count 9 indentations, which tells me its 9 speed. I did check a 98 catalog and they did have a 9 speed DT shifter that year. Ive posted a pic for confirmation/correction.
So finally my question:
Can I use these shifters with 8 speed setup anyway? My guess is probably not although I read somewhere that Campy didnt change pull ratios until 2000. If not, can I use the 8 speed Record RD to shift a 9 speed group? My other options are 10 speed Chorus RD, Racing Triple RD that came with another 8 speed group.
9 speed is the biggest gap in my Campy knowledge. I only have one bike in the house with that, my wifes. Hmmm, shes off on a girl trip now, maybe I could strip her bike down while shes gone.
