These are not cheap speakers. But they really are quite good. I had trouble, at first, finding the right pigeon hole with which to characterise them.
At this moment, I am listening to Highway to Hell. Sounds good, but it lacks the rough edges you expect from AC/DC. However, that slight omission makes them easy to live with.
These are not optimised for any particular type of music. They have good bass. It's not exaggerated, the way many speakers are. But if the recording engineer laid down the bass track with a heavy hand, you will definitely know it.
I have these in a small room with my computer, they are computer speakers, first and foremost. But I am tempted to try them as home theater speakers. They would be limited in that they couldn't fill a large room, but I have the feeling they would be very enjoyable. I use my old stereo for my home theater (such as it is) and my preamp has been in the shop for nearly a year. So when I say I am tempted, it's not an idle threat.
My old speakers have 12 inch woofers that get into the mid 20hz range before they roll off. The smaller woofers in the A5+ would give up in the 40hz area, at least that's my guess. Still, it would be a huge improvement over my crap tv speakers.
Audioengine makes a stand for their speakers. I think most situations would benefit from them. I have mine on thick books to decouple them from the table.
At some point I need to get some music files with greater fidelity than Youtube, maybe that Apple thing. But these definitely get the job done.
