Packing a bike for air luggage: Remove fork?

Is there any advantage to removing the fork when packing a bike for taking it as checked luggage on a flight? I imagine it will make for a much more compact total package, and I know good bike shops on both ends which can help me get the bike packed assembled again. My guess is that because...
