Replacing SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed derailleur

My kid has busted his second SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed derailleur in under a year. I don't want to buy another one.
Would it be possible to replace this with (for example) a Shimano XT long-cage derailleur, or a Box 2 "extra wide" derailleur (both can cope with 50T) and keep the SRAM 12-speed...
