2025 PointsBet Invitational kicks off Wednesday in Calgary

0 9

Canada’s best curling teams, almost surely including foursomes that will represent Canada in Italy in February, will open play Wednesday in the 2025 PointsBet Invitational at the WinSport Event Centre in Calgary.

Wednesday’s opening draw, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (all times Mountain), will feature Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., on the heels of Gushue announcing earlier this month that this will be his final season of competitive curling.

As well, the seven women’s and seven men’s teams (including Team Gushue) that have qualified for the 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials, presented by Connect Hearing, will be in Calgary, tuning up their games as part of the leadup to the Trials, which will determine Canada’s four-player women’s and men’s teams that will be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee to represent Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Those teams will be joined in Calgary by three additional entries based on last season’s results: the top Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) squad not qualified for the Montana’s Trials, the highest-ranked NextGen Under-27 team on the CTRS, and the 2025 New Holland Canadian Under-20 champions.

They’ll all be on the ice Wednesday at the WinSport Event Centre, with draw times set for 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (all times Mountain). Those round-robin draw times will repeat Thursday, Friday and Saturday, leading to the finals on Sunday, Oct. 5, with the women’s final at 11 a.m. and the men’s final at 4 p.m.

The 10 teams in each gender are split into two round-robin pools of five. With the pool winners advancing directly to the men’s and women’s finals on closing day, every game in the round robin matters.

Each team is guaranteed $5,000 to cover travel costs, and will earn $2,500 for each round-robin victory. The women’s and men’s champions will pocket $35,000 on top of their round-robin earnings, while runner-up teams will settle for $15,000 apiece.

Wednesday’s opening draw will feature Team Gushue taking on Team Calan MacIsaac of Truro, N.S., the reigning men’s champions of the New Holland Canadian Under-20 Championships.
