Susan Polgar on the Total Chess World Championship
The chess world has a World Chess Championship 2026, where Gukesh will battle with the winner of Candidates 2026. It also has a World Rapid & Blitz Championships that will take place in December. There used to be a Fisher Random / Freestyle / Chess960 World Championship as well.
Now the chess world will have a new Total World Chess Championship format. Norway Chess launches New World Championship format in 2026, approved by FIDE, and titled Total World Chess Championship. It will consist of four events each year and crown a combined champion across three disciplines – Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz chess. See what is Fast Classic here
Susan Polgar published her opinion on the creation of the Total Chess World Championship. Susan Polgar says, “What is the difference between World Classical Championship, World Rapid Championship, and World Blitz Championship and the winner of all 3 is World Triple Crown Champion, something which was achieved by only 3 players in history (2 women and 1 man), and a Total World Championship? So then will the other 3 events be canceled?” She adds, “Wimbledon is on grass, French Open is on clay and US Open/Australian Open on hard court (even though different bounce/speed). Tennis thrived big time without combining all 3 in one tournament. They remained independent titles. But maybe chess people know better.”
