Nihal Sarin and Matthias Bluebaum are co-leaders after round 7 of the FIDE Grand Swiss

0 122

In Round 7 of the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the Open section witnessed a seismic shift at the top as Indian Nihal Sarin stunned tournament leader Parham Maghsoodloo with a precise victory, vaulting to 5.5/7 and joint lead. Matthias Bluebaum joined him by delivering a shock upset against Indian Arjun Erigaisi, capitalizing on a tactical oversight in a sharp middlegame. Defending champion Vidit Gujrathi notched a crucial win over Marc’Andria Maurizzi to reach 5/7, while rising star Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu rebounded with a convincing triumph against Maxim Rodshtein.

World Champion Gukesh endured a harrowing third consecutive defeat, falling to 16-year-old Turkish prodigy Ediz Gurel in a wild roller-coaster battle that swung decisively in Black’s favor after Gukesh overpressed in the complications.

With four rounds remaining in the 11-round Swiss events, the standings remain fluid, promising intense battles for the two Open spots for the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
