Here is what Tennyson Olisa said before the event:
“The countdown has begun. From September 3rd to 15th, I’ll be representing Nigeria and Africa at the prestigious FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan ; one of the world’s most elite chess tournaments. It’s an incredible honor to be the first Nigerian to qualify for this event, and I’m heading there with one goal: to compete boldly, create upsets, and etch my name in the sands of time ; not just for myself, but for every young dreamer watching from across Nigeria. This journey has never been mine alone. It’s been powered by family, faith, grit, and the unwavering support of a growing community that believes in what’s possible. As I prepare to carry the Nigerian flag onto the global stage, I humbly invite corporate bodies, government institutions, and passionate individuals to be part of this history in the making. Your support ; in any form ; helps carry not just one player, but a nation’s hopes. Thank you to everyone who has stood by me so far. The road ahead is steep, but with your encouragement, I’m confident we can go far. Let’s show the world what Nigeria is made of.”
