World #1 Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen Bangs Table in Outburst

Magnus Carlsen, the number one-ranked chess player in the world, banged the table in an outburst after losing a match to Gukesh Dommaraju.

The video went viral on social media. It shows Carlsen banging his fist on the table after he realized that he had lost the chess game to Dommaraju.

"Oh my God!" he says, walking away from the table. Before walking away, he did shake Dommaraju's hand, the video shows.

Both are among the best players in the world. CNN called it a "shock" loss

NBC News referred to both men as "two of the titans of chess," referring to Carlsen as "arguably the greatest player of all time" and Dommaraju as "the up-and-coming champion."

Carlsen lost for the "first time" in a classical format, NBC reported.

According to Chess.com, Carlsen appeared to be winning in Norway Chess 2025 when Dommaraju, 19, "pounced on a blunder and turned the game around," defeating Carlsen in his "first classical win."

Dommaraju was "shaking" after winning and said he didn't "know what happened," according to Chess.com, which reported that Carlsen had "made no mistakes" throughout the game until that point.

Dommaraju is an "ambitious player," Carlsen said in a video posted by Chess.com. He called his own play "excellent."

According to CNN, Carlsen is usually considered a calm competitor, so the outburst surprised people. He skipped "media duties" afterward, CNN reported.

“99 out of 100 times, I would lose. Just a lucky day!” Dommaraju said later, according to CNN.

“First classical win against Magnus, I mean, not the way I wanted it to be, but OK, I’ll take it," he added, per CNN.

According to Chess.com, Carlsen is a grand master from Norway.

"To many, GM Magnus Carlsen is the best to ever play the game, although GMs Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer remain in the conversation," the site reports. "...Before turning 30 years old, Carlsen had already earned a spot at the top, and he has continued to dominate into his 30s."
