Gaprindashvili Cup is missing! A replacement trophy to be awarded at Chess Olympiad 2024

Chess Olympiad 2022 was a blast in many aspects and chess players hold dear memories of the event. India, as a host nation, was especially proud for winning the Gaprindashvili Cup. Named after Georgian legendary chess player Nona Gaprindashvili, the cup is awarded to the team with highest combined score at the Olympiad.

The 2024 Chess Olympiad will see a replacement of the trophy… because the original has gone missing! AICF vice-president Anil Kumar Raizada told PTI that the trophy has been missing for over a month and it came, after the International Chess Federation (FIDE) had asked for the trophy to be brought to Budapest.

“After we had received a request from FIDE for the trophy to be brought, we have been unable to trace it for over 30 days. As a result, we have filed an official police complaint, and an investigation will follow,” he said.

“Yes, we tried to look for it all around following FIDE’s request. However, we have been unable to locate it so far. It is indeed an embarrassing situation, and these things require utter responsibility,” the senior official stated on the condition of anonymity.

The Chess Olympiad 2024 winners of the Gaprindashvili Cup will receive a replica of the trophy. This is the only solution left, after the 30 days search did not yield any results.
