SEASON 2023-24

JUNIOR 4NCL (Nations Chess League)

Thurs 2nd Nov 23 – 6:00pm
Season 8 – Round 5
Division Three – Group A
A joint venture between Castlehill Chess Club Dundee and Dundee Chess Club.

RESULT
Dundee City Juniors (980) 6½ – 1½ (976) Hilsmark Juniors 2
What a fantastic result by our juniors against a decent junior side. The overall team gradings looked close, but the reality was, we massively out graded the Hilsmark board one, but equally, Dundee City Juniors were out graded on the rest of the boards, especially boards 3 & 4!

We also had a bit of luck on the night which would not have stopped us winning, but would have made the score a bit closer! Of course winning the first 4 matches was a big bonus and was the difference in the end!

Board One: Matthew Hunter (1535) was just too strong for his opponent (995) and won both well, although he did take it to the edge time wise in the first game!

Board Two: Josh Dickson (983) won his first game, but found himself in trouble in his second game, and indeed was in a lost position, only for his opponent (1082) to keep checking Josh`s King instead of pushing his pawns to queen and ended in a threefold repetition (Lichess automatically apply that), which must have come as a shock to both players! Does not matter how you get the points as long as you get them!

Board Three: Noah Dickson (675) Like Josh, Noah won his first game, but in his second game he was a Queen down for a rook and in a lost position! Unbelievably, like his brother, Josh, Noah drew by threefold repetition! His opponent (944) and Noah, must have fallen off their chair`s when that happened!

But Josh & Noah, has nothing on Master Haoqi Lui, Mister, never give in no matter what!

Board Four: Haoqi Lui (474). Just like his team mates, Haoqi won his first game, and like Josh & Noah, he was losing in his second game (Understatement)! Haoqi only had his King, while his opponent (795) a King, 2 rooks and 5 pawns! After a few checks by his opponent and with Haoqi`s King trapped in his opponent’s camp on the queenside, finally his opponent started pushing his pawn for a queen. The only problem was they queened leaving Haoqi with no legal moves, so “STALEMATE”!

You can`t make this up, nobody would believe you!

What a match! Easy street in the first four singles, and a hell of a lot of madness and luck in the last 4 singles to take the match! Dundee City wish Hilsmark Juniors all the best for the last two rounds!

Well played Matthew, Josh, Noah and Haoqi!

Dundee City Juniors move into 5th place on 4 points, with 2 rounds left.

In the title of an Osmond’s song, this match was “CRAZY HORSES”!
