The chess.com Speed Chess took place Mon 4th to Fri 22nd September 2023. The final was between Magnus Carlsen and defending Champion Hikaru Nakamura for the second year running. Magnus Carlsen won the event by a point. Last year the 5+1 portion was won 6.5-2.5 by Nakamura and even though Carlsen fought back he couldn't overcome this deficit because of the control it gave Nakamura. This year there was only a point in all the sections, Carlsen won the 5+1 5-4, Nakamura won the 3+1 5-4 but it was Carlsen who triumphed in the Bullet where Nakamura often dominates but where Carlsen is the only one who can match him. Carlsen won that 4.5-3.5 but led by two at one stage and this meant Nakamura was on the back foot this year in the final stages where he controlled things last year to the point where he could run the clock down.
