CLUB NIGHT REPORTS (& catch up news!)
Thurs 16th Feb 23

Not sure what is going on but chess is certainly going strong in the Dundee City area at Castlehill Chess Club, Dundee and Dundee Chess Club. Long may it continue for both clubs!

On the night Castlehill had 4 teams playing in TAFCA!
TAFCA LEAGUE
Div 1 results
Castlehill A (1725) 3 – 1 (1375) Castlehill D
Another win for Castlehill A, but not without a struggle! Well played Graham Atkins (1352) playing for our “C” team with a fine win against Leyton Hackney (1617)! Talk about turning back the hands of time Mr Atkins! Still this keeps Castlehill A on track for an outside shot at the division one title. They still have to face the two big guns, Dundee A and St.Andrews Uni A, but you never know.

Castlehill C (1415) 1½ – 2½ (1617) Dundee B
Castlehill C battled hard against their much higher graded opponents! So close, and some opertunities missed, but in the end, just could not get that extra ½ point! Congratulations to Dundee B on winning the match. This was their second visit to our abode in a week, after playing Castlehill A last time week.

Alisdair McLeod (1531) on board one got a fantastic win against Keith Emery (1689)! Ed Walton (1481) also did well, getting the draw against John Robertson Jnr (1562).

TAFCA KNOCKOUT
Semi-Final Result
St.Andrews Uni A 7½ – ½ Castlehill B
Congratulations to St.Andrews Uni A on their convincing victory to reach the TAFCA Knockout final against Perth A! Castlehill B went to St. Andrews with some hope, but got their dreams crushed in brutal fashion by the St.Andrews players!

We got slaughtered, murdered, bludgeoned, thrown to the wolves, tarred and feathered all in one. They were just too strong! But just when you need a “HERO” along comes our top board, Andy Rowe, standing tall, putting up resistance and getting a draw in game one which stopped the whitewash! He also put up a good fight in game two!
Oh well you can’t win them all and at least we were not paraded through the Streets of St.Andrews!

Now for some TAFCA league catch up because I never got the time to report the stuff below until now!

Thurs 9th Feb 23
TAFCA
Div 1 – Results

Castlehill E 1½ – 2½ Castlehill C
Another close battle with Castlehill C just keeping their noses in front to the end! Daniel Coleman (1060) got a great win against Cosmo Bobak (1530) on board 3, while on board 2, Norman Waugh (1160) got a well deserved draw against Conor Kelly (1450)!
Castlehill A 4 – 0 Dundee B
Convincing win for Castlehill A against a strong Dundee B side who always come to fight and have caused our “A” team problems in the past! Well played lads!

Mon 13th Feb 23

Dundee A 1½ – 2½ St.Andrews Uni A
What a result by St.Andrews Uni A against the defending champions and favourites for their 10th title in a row, Dundee A! Not only that, they did it with only two of their regular “A” team players and had to borrow from their “B” team! That opens up the title race big time! I at first thought it was the first time Dundee A had been beaten in years, but after checking back before I did the report, they did lose last year online to Castlehill C and in the last OTB season in 2018-19 to Castlehill A.

This gives St.Andrews Uni A a great chance to win the title if they can hold their nerve!

For the games, checkout the Dundee Chess Club website (link below), all provided by Ray Flood who is a breath of fresh air on the reporting front!

For all the latest on TAFCA, results and standings, checkout the TAFCA website either directly or through the Castlehill website (Main menu: TAFCA).

Until the next time, when the story continues…
