What a fantastic four days of chess for all the home nation juniors taking part! No matter what, all of the home nation juniors will have gained a lot of experience playing in this long running iconic junior event.
England as expected was too strong in all four competitions and were worthy winners. Mind you Scotland did give them a run for their money in the Stokes! Given the disparity between England and the rest of the home nations when it comes to size of populations and players to pick from, the rest of us were playing with our hands tied behind our backs! Then again, nothing new there!
GLORNEY CUP – Under 18`s
Round 5
Ireland 1½ – 3½ Scotland
Round 6
Scotland 3½ – 1½ Wales
Scotland finished the Glorney in fine style winning both their last two matches! This meant they finished runners-up on 6 points and 14½ game points. This was a fantastic performance from our juniors! They can feel proud of the way they all played!
JESSICA GILBERT CUP – Girls Under 18`s
Round 5
Ireland 2 – 1 Scotland
Round 6
Scotland 0 – 3 England B
The girls found this a very tough event, but hopefully they have taken something from the tournament and are not too disheartened. If they can find positives, like the win against Ireland, to take away to build on, the competition will have been a success!
Scotland finished in third place on 1 point match point and 4 game points. Just shows against all the odds, when the going gets tough, the tough get going! We are all proud of you all!
JOHN ROBINSON CUP – Under 14`s

Ireland 4½ – 1½ Scotland
Round 6
Scotland 5 – 1 Wales
Scotland once again proved they have what it takes at junior level to compete against the other home nations! England were always going to be a tough nut to crack and Ireland showed they have some very talented juniors at this level, almost toppling England in the process! Scotland in the last two rounds lost one and won one to finish in third place on 2 match points and 16½ game points. Fantastic performance from our under 14`s!
Special mention to Castlehill`s own, Rishi Vijayakumar J10
Rishi Vijayakumar J10 (Castlehill): Scotland Junior squad player (John Robinson Cup – U14`s)
who finished with 2 win, 2 draws and one defeat (round 1) and a TPR 1786. After tasting defeat in his first match, Rishi showed his mental strength and bounced back well!
He did not play in the last match, but rather than take a rest, he arranged a Castlehill Club Random Knockout Q/Final competition match that night to fill his time! He won it as well to each the semi-finals!
BERNADETTE STOKES CUP – Under 12`s

Ireland 1 – 5 Scotland
Round 6
Scotland 3 – 3 Wales
With a win and a draw in the last two rounds, Scotland finished the competition as runners-up! What a fantastic performance from our Under12`s! They ended up on 4 match points and 21 game points to finish behind England who they shocked in the first round beating them 4 – 2! So much to be proud of when it comes to our juniors!
The Glorney Festival was a great success once again and thanks to all the organisers and helpers involved. It’s a big event and this time was played in 4 venues (online with arbiters), one from each home nation with the Welsh Chess Federation (Union?) organising and coordinating the event. Special mention to all the parents who’s support and dedication to their children makes these events very special indeed!
