Earth Day 2021????
Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day was created in the United States to increase public awareness of environmental problems and is now celebrated around the world. Earth Day is credited with starting the environmental movement in the United States, beginning in April of 1970.
Many important environmental events have happened on Earth Day since 1970 and Earth Day continues to be a momentous and unifying day each and every year. Recently, Earth Day has brought attention to pollution in the oceans and seas with the increasing dumps of waste and toxins, land debris, soil corruption and corrosion, deforestation, overpopulation, and the deletion of the ozone layer. Responding to these crises, Earth Day promotes the conservation of the all of the Earth’s ecosystems; including energy management with reduced emissions, reducing pollution, and stressing the importance of climate literacy and environmental education.
With over 1 billion people involved in Earth Day activities:
Earth Day is the largest single secular civic event in the world.
Earth Day Network
The Earth Day Network and the organization Earthday.org grew out of the 1970 event and works with over 17,000 partners and organizations in approximately 175 countries, world-wide, advocating for positive environmental action.
The theme of Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth
Our natural systems have been degraded – leading to climate change along with new and fatal diseases as well as a breakdown of the global economy. Restore Our Earth reminds us of the opportunities that lay ahead, even as we reflect upon the harm we have caused.
We need Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. We can agree we need a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. The health of our planet is vital to all of us.
