ROUND 5
Friday 26th February 21, 7:05pm – Wallace Chess (Eng) 4, Dundee City (Scot) A 4
Four boards in play.
What a match this was with Dundee City A out graded on top two boards, the reverse for bottom two boards!
After the first round of four matches, the writing looked to be on the wall for Dundee City losing 3 -1! The result and performance of the round for Dundee A was Andrew Greet`s IM win against a GM rated 2545! What a win and it gave Dundee City some hope in the next 4 matches.
It was not Andrew Wrights night on board 2 as he lost both his matches this time. Ed Spencer on board 3, managed to win his second match to share the honours, as did Sam Gregory on board 4, who was the last match to finish to secure Dundee City A the draw in fine style. Well played everyone in this team game!
While Sam had the honour of finishing the match, all the plaudits should go to Andrew Greet IM for winning both of his matches on top board against a GM! A stellar performance, by any stretch of the imagination, no draws just wins! Magnificent team event as Dundee City A snatch a draw from defeat! A tale of two half’s! Great Chess to watch, especially the final game when Dundee City A (Sam Gregory) had to win!
Dundee City A are in 4th place on 4½ points, just a ½ point behind the leaders on 5 points. This in a league of 125 teams!

Round 5
Sunday 21st February 21 – 7pm – Chess Hero`s 7½, Dundee City B 6½
7 boards in play
This was a tough match and one Dundee City B might have fancied their chances before the match started. Unfortunately the first round of matches did not go well at all. 6 – 1 down was a disaster with all players losing apart from David Findlay (board 1) and Declan Shafi (board 3) getting draws! It looked over and out, but boy did our players put up a jaw dropping fight back and give Chess Hero’s the fright of their life as Dundee City B almost pulled victory out of the jaws of defeat! Fantastic second half fights back with Alan Borwell, Richard Kynoch and Michael Grove all winning to share the spoils. On board three, Declan was in scintillating form winning his second match to take it, 1½ – ½! Stephen Hogg (board 2) and Graham Mooney (board 7) both drew, while top board David Findlay also drew his second match to bring Dundee City B within a whisker of upsetting the apple cart! Not enough this time but what a second half! After losing 6-1 in the first round of matches, but had the tenacity to take the second half 5½ – 1½. Now that’s what I call chess!
Dundee City B are in 36th place on 3½ points within a league of 125 teams!
The City of Dundee is flying high in the chess world. But then again we are the city of discovery!
