JUNIOR 4NCL – Tues 12th  Nov 20 – 7:30pm – Match Report: Heartache for Dundee City Juniors

The 4NCL is a joint venture between Castlehill Chess Club Dundee and Dundee Chess Club. We have 2 teams in the 4NCL and one team in the 4JNCL (junior team).

Division 3 – Group A

Surbiton Juniors C 6, Dundee City Juniors 2

Oh what a nights chess for our junior team! After all the highs in the last 6 rounds, it was back down to earth with a bump! Yes sitting top of the table before this last match of the qualifying stages, Dundee City Juniors faced a side whose board to board grades were far superior to theirs apart from board 1.

Board one Rishi Vijaykumar J9 was too good for his opponents on the night. Indeed his opponent must have wondered what had hit him. Was it a bird? Was it a plane? Was it Superman? No it was Castlehill`s very own junior hurricane, Rishi Vijayakumar! Rishi won both his matches before the rest of the team had finished their first match to give Dundee Juniors a 2 – 0 lead!

Unfortunately it went all down hill from there as Surbiton Juniors C were just too strong on the other three boards despite the valiant efforts of our brave juniors! Alexander Barron-Majerik, Josh Dickson and Noah Dickson put up a good defence, but sometimes no matter how well you play, you are up against a better player and as of yet do not have the skill set to take them down!

This loss in the last match has proved fatal as Dundee City Juniors drop to third place behind winners, Rhodes Avenue Knights and Surbiton Juniors C who jumped above Dundee Juniors into 2nd place. This means Dundee City Juniors just miss out on the play-offs and do not get promoted to division two (you had to finish in the top two places in each of the 4 groups to gain promotion). So close, yet so far. Having said that the top two teams above us in group A, are the only two teams Dundee City Juniors lost too! Says it all I think! Our juniors have excelled themselves and punched well above their weight in this division.

Fantastic job by all our juniors!

SQUAD

  • Rishi Vijayakumar: Pld 10; Won 10; Lost 0; Unbeaten. 5 Star!
  • Ramit Kanodia: Pld 10; Won 9; Lost 1; 4½ Stars!
  • Alexander Barron-Majerik: Pld 10; Won 6; Drn 2; Lost 2; 4 Stars

  • Noah Dickson: Pld 6; Won 2; Drn 1; Lost3
  • Charvi Kanodia: Pld 1 Lost 1

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and the team selection policy was to give everybody games, but had Rishi played against Rhodes Avenue Knights, the result might have gone in our favour and just maybe… but then again maybe not?

I hope you all enjoyed the experience and hopefully you will take something from it.

We at Castlehill Chess Club Dundee are so proud of you all and can’t wait for the day we meet again (or for the first time!) when the club opens it’s doors again hopefully sometime next year.

A big thank you to Declan Shaff who captained the team and guided them thou the league campaign. As always an inspiration to us all!

Well played everybody!
