CLUB NIGHT REPORT: Thurs 23rd Jan 20

We had over 35 players down to play chess tonight and the place was buzzing! We had one TAFCA League match, one TAFCA Knockout match, Junior Club Championship matches, one Club Championship match and ladder matches! I am exhausted just typing this all up never mind playing!

TAFCA
Results
Div 2: Castlehill E 1½. Dundee C 2½

It was an uphill struggle for Castlehill E after their top board did not turn up and they had to default. They fought hard but it was just too much to catch up on! Well played Dundee C!

Knockout Q/F: Castlehill A 5, Castlehill B 3
It’s congratulations to Castlehill A as the move into the semi-finals after beating their own “B” team. It was looking like a stroll in the park for the “A” team as they took all 4 of the first half matches to lead 4 – 0 and only needing a ½ point from the last 4 matches to win”!

Castlehill B were having none of it and in a reverse of the first half, won the first 3 matches to make it 4 – 3 to the “A” team with just the top board to finish! What a fantastic fight back! If it ended 4 – 4, Castlehill B would be the winners in the tie-break rule being the lower graded team!

The last match on the top board was between Andre Babin and Jan Barron-Majerik. Looking at the board I am not sure what happened but it transpires that Andre was in time trouble but had the attack. All Jan had to do was avoid being checkmated and he would win on time! Unbelievably, but given André’s quality, not unexpected, Andre delivered checkmate with just “TWO” seconds left. Phew! With that win our “A” team move forward to face either St.Andrews Uni or Castlehill F.

Well played everyone, and what a fight back by our “B” team, only to be dashed at the last minute by 2 seconds!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
Result Round 2

Colin Young 0, Fergus Milne 1
Terrific match with a brilliant finish by Fergus to be on two out of two! Colin played well but Fergus just piled on and piled on the pressure until Colin had no answer in the end!

JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
It`s been a bit slow this season, but finally we had a good few matches played. Ramit Kanodia the defending champion won all of his matches to take the lead at the top of the table! Can anybody stop him winning it again? Well that’s up to the other juniors to improve and take him on!

LADDER
Hard to believe but this is only the 2nd Ladder night played this season! It’s been that busy at Castlehill with loads of chess going on! Ray Noble staked his claim for another final after winning all three of his matches, including beating top seed on the night, Robert Jackson!

TAFCA LEAGUE
Results

Wed 22nd Jan 20
Div 1: Kirkcaldy A 1½, Castlehill C 2½
What a result against all the odds as our “C” team upset the apple cart with this amazing win against Kirkcaldy A!

# Kirkcaldy A  v  Castlehill C
1. R.Kynoch  1 – 0 Roy Morris
2. S.Blyth  0 – 1   Ed Walton
3. I.Marshall  ½ – ½  Colin Young
4. B.Sudjc  0 – 1 Colm Hawkins

Roy was up against it on board one, but Ed`s win against Stuart was superb! Newbie Colm Hawkins did fantastic against the very experienced Branislv Sudjc. Of course it was left to captain fantastic, Colin Young to earn the draw that won the match and made it a night to remember!

This result gives some realistic chances of Castlehill C avoiding the two relegation places. Castlehill C have a long history of avoiding the drop and staying in the top division despite them being the only “C” team there!
It is still in their own hands as they lead by 3 points from their nearest rival, Dundee B, who they have yet to play. Win that match and they may well be safe!

Lets do it again and defy the odds once again!
