CLUB NIGHT REPORT: (Thurs 22nd Aug 19)

Another belter of a chess night at Castlehill Chess Club! Over 34 players down, including juniors. It was the last night of the Summer, the 2nd part of the Junior Club Championship and the Random Knockout final. As I say a lot still going on!

BOB DUNN SUMMER
Round 4 (Last)
It`s congratulations to Master Tom Constance  for becoming the Castlehill Bob Dunn Summer Champion 2018-19! He beat Cameron Wilson in his last match to finish on 12 points. A fantastic achievement for Tom and may I say, a well deserved one after all the hard work he has done. Finally he comes out of the shadows of his other contemporises, Declan Shafi and Euan Dawson to claim what we all knew he could do! Tom is involved in a lot of other activities which does make it harder to compete at chess. But Tom has shown what we at Castlehill all knew, he is a talented young chess player and a fine young man and he deserved this title big time!

Well done to Keith Rose and Peter Sallai on finishing runner-up on 10 points. Keith did it in style beating the very strong Jan Barron-Majerik. Peter did not get that chance as his opponent Alan Woodcock had urgent family matters to attend to with his cat having a lot of problems and needing urgent medical care from the vets. I am sure we all wish a speedy recovery.  Alan and there’s always next year!

A couple of results of note on the night! Alan Brown got his first ever win in competitive normal grade matches after he beat Norrie Carroll. Well played Alan!

Marten Kats in a marathon of a match against Colin “War of attrition” Young, pulled off a great finish to over come his much higher graded opponent! Well played and a nice finish with both players sacrificing their queens for rooks!

RANDOM KNOCKOUT FINAL
Congratulations to Robert Jackson on becoming the Castlehill Random Knockout Champion 2018-19 after beating the defending champion Ray Noble  in the final! It turned out to be a one-sided final after Ray went a Bishop down after a typical error from him! Well deserved Robert!

Ray can’t complain too much and has to be proud of his efforts. This is the third year in a row Ray has reached the final which shows he can be a very deceptive player for his grade and will always give his best, even when it’s shockingly bad at times!

JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
Second half

For some reason only 3 out of the 6 matches were played, so it will need to be concluded next week! Rishabh Akula leads the way on 4 points, but defending champion Ramit Kanodia  is only a point behind with on game in hand over Rishabh! It looks like it will all hinge on their final match against each other, unless Alexander Barron-Majerik can put a spanner in the works when he plays Ramit first!

Next week also sees the Ladder Final taking place, and what a strong final it will be! With that and the conclusion of the junior championship, it’s already looking liker another big nights chess at Castlehill!
