Kulaots Wins Aeroflot, Qualifies for Dortmund

0 7

What an upset! 62nd seed Kaido Kulaots of Estonia, rated 2542, won the 2019 Aeroflot Open on tiebreaks ahead of Haik Martirosyan (whose outstanding result was itself surprising), and did so the day before his 43rd birthday. There's no chance he'll take this as the moment to retire (following in 43-year-old Vladimir Kramnik's footsteps), as winning the Aeroflot Open continues to be an automatic qualifer for the Dortmund super-tournament this July (13-21).

More on the remarkable achievement here.
