FIDE World Cup 2017 -

The FIDE World Cup took place Sunday 3rd to Wednesday 27th September 2017 in Tbilisi, Georgia. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen headed a very strong field but departed in the 3rd round losing to Bu Xiangzhi. 5th seed Levon Aronian beat 11th seed Ding Liren in the final 4-2. Both players qualified for the Candidates by reaching this final. Ding Liren went undefeated until the very final day of the event where he lost both rapid tie-break games. This is Levon Aronian's second title 12 years after his first in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2005 where he beat Ruslan Ponomariov.
