Rivian Plans High-Performance R2X Variant With 652 HP

0 22

Rivian's new R2 Performance trim delivers a hilariously overdone 652 horsepower. According to CEO RJ Scaringe, an even higher-performance R2X could be on the way too, despite the fact that deliveries have scarcely begun. Speaking with Reuters, Scaringe said that the automaker has planned R2 production to allow for other variants. "Clearly, there could be an R2X. There are going to be combinations. I want to be careful not to announce the program."

From the looks of it, the brand's performance nomenclature will stick with a model name followed by the "X" designation, as introduced on the Rivian R3X. The small hatch-like crossover isn't out yet, but it will be. It'll bring more off-road performance and presumably, more power to the mix. Similarly, an R2X will bring still more performance, both in terms of power and off-road performance, when it does debut. That will likely come after the R3's launch, as the brand's production timeline indicates the smallest entry point to the brand will come first.

The new R2 will be a massively important moment for Rivian, bringing the experience to more buyers at a previously unheard-of price. Even range-topping versions don't approach $70,000, with the lineup starting at under $50,000. Rivian will look to increase sales with the more affordable option, bringing new faces to the brand and helping to boost production. Other versions are clearly planned beyond the three announced trims, though Scaringe was tight-lipped as to what they'll be: "What we're building in Georgia allows for different variations."
