Hit Prime Video Series Goes Into Production for Season 2 With Its Returning Leads
We haven't seen the last of John and Jane Smith – at least the versions played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in Prime Video's Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The long-awaited sophomore season of the spy thriller is finally in production in LA. Despite previous reports that Erskine and Glover wouldn't reprise their roles, Deadlinereveals that the duo will return. Season 1, which debuted on the platform on Feb. 2, 2024, concluded with John and Jane in a high-octane shootout. Viewers are led to believe that neither will survive, but nevertheless, their fate still hangs precariously in the balance. Confirmation of their return presumably means they survive; however, in what capacity Glover and Erskine will appear remains to be seen.
Erskine and Glover will also board Mr. & Mrs. Smith as executive producers for Season 2. They'll be joined by new faces on screen: Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder, who will step into the roles of a younger John and Jane Smith. Ryder replaces Sophie Thatcher. Thatcher was in negotiations for the part but had to back out when filming was pushed indefinitely due to a scheduling conflict with Yellowjackets.
Glover co-created Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Francesca Sloane, the latter of whom served as showrunner for Season 1. Sloane moved to HBO during the Season 2 filming delay, with Anna Ouyang Moench replacing her in the role. Moench will also serve as writer and executive producer, with Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas, and Fam Udeorji returning as executive producers.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith snagged a whopping 16 Emmy nominations, including for Erskine for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The show took home Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Michaela Coel and Outstanding Stunt Coordination for Drama Programming for Stephen Pope.
The synopsis for Season 2 is under lock and key, but here's hoping Glover's John and Erskine's Jane make it out alive long enough to warn the newbies about just what they're getting into.
