The 'Project Hail Mary' Adventure Will Continue in a Surprising New Way

Moviegoers who can't get enough of Project Hail Mary will get to bring the out-of-this-world imagery into their own homes later this year. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars is an upcoming mixed-reality game that introduces players to a brand new chapter in the film's expanding universe.

The new virtual reality sci-fi game will comprise of "an untold chapter of the Hail Mary mission," with a story written by Project Hail Mary and The Martian author Andy Weir himself. The game will be available on mixed reality and VR headset platforms in late 2026.

"Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more," Weir says, "this is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie that you can experience in mixed reality.”

How It Works

Players will get to explore from the perspective of Ryan Gosling -- wondering the spacecraft as its lone survivor Ryland Grace. The official site teasing the upcoming game promises opportunities to "diagnose failing systems, improvise scientific solutions, and push the limits of science and engineering."

It isn't all hard work aboard the spacecraft, though. Explore space from the comfort of your own home and partner with the film's lovable alien explorer Rocky to save humanity one more time. Players can use hand gestures to communicate with the virtual Rocky, utilizing signs from the film like jazz hands or a fist bump.

In a video teasing the new project, Weir sits down with the film's directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller to test out some of the game's preliminary controls. One shot shows the player reaching out to grab a roll of duct tape that is floating around in the cockpit's zero-gravity atmosphere.

History of VR Gaming

Maze Theory, the VR company developing the immersive game, already has a history of turning world renowned IP into mixed reality experiences. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars will be brought to you by the creators of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time and Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom. Maze Theory is also the company behind the successful Thief VR game.

No official release date has been made public yet for Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars, but it is expected to drop sometime in late 2026. Fans of the Project Hail Mary franchise hope that this comes as a stepping-stone to a sequel for the highly-successful film.
