Are Nintendo Switch 2 Game Prices Increasing? Here's Everything We Know So Far

0 3

The Nintendo Switch 2 remains one of the fastest-selling consoles in history, despite numerous controversies, such as the use of Game-Key Cards for game distribution and the shocking $79.99 price tag of Mario Kart World. Now, it looks like game prices this year and into the future may remain fluid.

In a statement made by Nintendo on its official website (which was linked from a Yoshi and the Mysterious Book pre-order post by Nintendo of America on socials), Nintendo stated that, "beginning in May 2026, and starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, new Nintendo published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 will have an MSRP that is different from physical versions."

Currently, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is listed for $59.99 for the digital version of the game, while the physical version is priced at $69.99, at least on Nintendo's official website.

By that wording, it seems to imply all upcoming releases beyond May 2026 could potentially see a difference in price between the digital version and the physical version.

Nintendo stated that the price change was due to cost measures, writing, "Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format and offers players more choice in how they can buy and play Nintendo games."

Though it seems the price increase will not be universal. Nintendo concluded its message by writing, "As always, retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and pricing for each title may vary."

Later, Nintendo released a statement to IGN, which had reached out to Nintendo for clarification on potential price increases.

Nintendo said the following in its message: "The cost of physical games is not going up. This means that when Nintendo sells digital versions of Nintendo-published games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 to consumers in the U.S., those prices will have an MSRP that is lower than their physical counterparts. Retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and pricing for each title may vary."

While individual game prices may continue to vary, this specific situation with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is not an overall game price increase, and game prices for Nintendo Switch 2 titles will remain variable.

Nintendo has also stated previously that price increases for the Nintendo Switch 2 console are not out of the question. Back when the pre-order date for the Nintendo Switch 2 was delayed, Nintendo noted global tariffs and unstable market conditions as the reasons behind the increase in price for Nintendo Switch 2 accessories before launch, but also stated, " adjustments to the price of any Nintendo product are also possible in the future depending on market conditions."
