Dead batteries never happen at a convenient time—which is exactly why a reliable portable jump starter is one of the smartest pieces of gear you can keep in your vehicle. After testing a handful of options on everything from daily drivers to project trucks, one model stood out immediately: the Wolfbox MegaVolt24.

With a claimed 4,000-amp output, the ability to jump large engines, and a compact design that slips easily under a seat, this portable jump starter promises serious power without the usual hassle. More importantly, in real-world use, it proved fast, simple, and consistently dependable—exactly what you want when your car won’t start.

Wolfbox MegaVolt24 Jump Starter

The name might sounds straight out of a 1994 children toy box sold at Target, but Wolfbox’s claimed ratings for the MegaVolt24 sure look impressive: 4,000 peak amp output, capable of starting engines up to 10 liters in displacement, and even waterproof to IP64 standard for use in light rain or splashing water. OK, all that sounds totally overboard for my little 2.4-liter inline-four in my vintage Mitsubishi Mighty Max. But more important than the specs, this jump pack’s reliability and ease of use take the cake.

Car batteries always seem to die at the worst possible time, so Wolfbox makes this unit simple to operate. The front has a clear digital screen and two buttons, and unlike so many other competitors, the MegaVolt24’s instructions are written on the back. There’s nothing worse than being in a rush somewhere with bad reception and being unable to Google how to use your jump pack that came with no manual. The beefy terminal clamps also spread with a wide bite, and seem unlikely to bend or fold like a few others I’ve experienced.

Even headed out to the racetrack on a cold morning, the MegaVolt24 has never failed to start up my truck on the first try. I’ve probably jumped with it 10 or 12 times so far, and also used the integrated flashlight while changing my motorcycle engine oil at night for about 45 minutes. Yet I only charged it once when it first arrived, and the battery still shows over 60% remaining. The included carrying pouch feels durable and fits a USB-C cable, the clamps, and a charging block easily. The side USB-A and USB-C ports can either charge or discharge, meaning this jump pack can also power smartphones or cameras, too.

Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty. I can admit the price tag seems a little steep at $170 but most other reputable competitors usually crack into triple digits, and I have yet to find one that immediately impressed me as much as the MegaVolt24, which only continued to do so over the past few months. For almost the same price, Wolfbox also sells a similar unit with a built-in tire inflator—which I’d be curious to try, though I typically carry a more substantial air compressor that’s much quicker for my larger truck tires. So the more compact form factor of the jump pack alone lets me slip it under my seat, ready to pull out a moment’s notice every time my battery dies. Which in all honesty, is probably next time and the time after that, too.
