Just Like That, The Ioniq 6 Is Dead

0 8

"Going forward, our award-winning Ioniq 6 lineup will consist of the all-new Ioniq 6 N," a Hyundai spokesperson told Edmunds. "Ioniq 6 N arrives later this year. In the meantime, 2025 Ioniq 6 sedans continue to be available." That's a long way of saying the Ioniq 6 is dead in the US, though you'll still be able to order the roughly $70,000 high-performance 6 N.

Likely, tariffs led to the 6's death. While it's mechanically similar to the Ioniq 5 crossover (which continues to sell well), there's one important distinction: the Ioniq 6 was built in Korea, while Hyundai had taken to assembling the Ioniq 5 here in the US at the brand's Georgia facility. Sales may have been another contributing factor: the Ioniq 5 outsold the sedan by more than a factor of 4 in 2025, and in 2026, sales continued to be poor for the 6.

No matter what, one key factor stood in the way of continued sales for the sedan: the suspension of the $7,500 federal tax credit for EVs. While some states offer incentives today, this was a federal-level incentive that applied to all new EVs that met certain requirements, like pricing. The Ioniq 6 was definitely eligible, and its pricing was downright attractive with the credit.

Poor sales and expensive import costs likely killed the sedan, but the vehicle itself certainly wasn't the problem. In fact, the Ioniq 6 was one of the better EVs out there, just like its crossover sibling. The sedan offered plenty of room for passengers and cargo, attractive styling (and pricing), great tech, and a fun driving experience coupled with solid range. Likely, the Ioniq 6 N will soon follow suit, unless it becomes some sort of massive hit with driving enthusiasts. Hyundai can make a fun-to-drive EV, but the same problem for the 6 N exists as it did for the Ioniq 6: the Ioniq 5 exists. There isn't much to dislike about the Ioniq 6 lineup, but it appears buyers simply like the funky Ioniq 5 more.
