After Two Historic Box Office Bombs, Sydney Sweeney Finally Has a Major Hit Movie

0 1

After Euphoria became a critical and commercial hit, Sydney Sweeney became one of the most talked-about actors in the world. Then, Sweeney starring in and executive producing Anyone but You made it seem like she was on her way to becoming a major movie star since that romantic comedy became a hit.

Unfortunately for Sweeney's career, however, her movies began having underwhelming performances at the box office after that. In fact, Sweeney starred in two movies in a row that were utter box office bombs. The great news for Sweeney and her many fans is that her latest film has become a major hit, despite competing against the latest chapter in a massive movie series.

Sydney Sweeney’s 'The Housemaid' Appears To Have Surpassed $111 Million at the Worldwide Box Office Already

On December 29, 2025, Forbes published an article focused on The Housemaid becoming a hit at the box office. According to that article, The Housemaid had made $46.5 million at the domestic box office in just 10 days. The article also stated that while the numbers hadn't been completely confirmed yet, it was believed that The Housemaid had made $65 million at the global box office. That would result in a worldwide box office take of $111.5 million for The Housemaid.

According to a January 2026 Deadline article, 59 movies have grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office as of this writing. The article also stated that the three highest-grossing movies of all time are Avatar, which made $2,923,710,708, Avengers: Endgame, which brought in $2,799,439,100, and Avatar: The Way of Water, which grossed $2,343,477,301. With numbers like those, The Housemaid's success may not seem that impressive. However, Forbes' aforementioned article stated that The Housemaid was produced for just $35 million, which makes it grossing $111.5 million in just 10 days a huge success, especially since its theatrical run is far from finished.

The fact that Sydney Sweeney's latest movie has made so much money already is extremely impressive for an interesting reason. The Housemaid was released on the same day as Avatar: Fire and Ash. Since the previous two Avatar movies are two of the three highest-grossing movies ever produced, the fact that The Housemaid has succeeded despite that is a huge achievement.

A psychological thriller film, The Housemaid stars Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. The movie focuses on an ex-con looking to restart her life, who moves in with a wealthy family that employs her as their live-in housekeeper. Things quickly go awry as dark family secrets lie under the idealistic surface that the family has built.

Sydney Sweeney’s Previous Two Movies, 'Christy' and 'Eden,' Were Massive Box Office Bombs

Roughly a month before Forbes was reporting on The Housemaid's success, the outlet was telling a very different story about Sydney Sweeney's previous movie. On November 10, 2025, Forbes reported that Sweeney's previous movie, Christy, had "one of the worst openings in box office history." According to that article, Christy brought in just $1.3 million during it opening weekend. Worse yet, the movie only made an average of $646 in each of the 2,184 theaters it played in during that weekend. Box Office Mojo reports that Christy's worldwide box office take ended at just $1,981,962. According to IMDb, Christy had an estimated budget of $15 million.

Prior to Christy's box office failure, Deadline reported on August 24, 2025, that Sweeney's movie, which came out before that, Eden, was a major box office bomb. According to that report, Eden only made $1 million during its opening weekend, which saw it released in 664 theaters. That same Deadline report states that Eden was produced on a $55 million gross budget, or $35 million net budget. According to Box Office Mojo, Eden made just $2,811,540 at the worldwide box office by the time its run ended, and IMDb lists its budget at an estimated $55 million.
