One U.S. Area Just Got Hit With 80 Inches of Snow, More on the Way

The National Weather Service (NWS) has kept busy over the holidays, with winter storm warnings and winter storm advisories actively being issued on a daily basis from Christmas through New Year's.

Now, one U.S. Town has been hit with a record-breaking 80 inches of now, and more is on the way. It's more than four times the average amount of snow for this time of year in the region.

The city is Juneau, Alaska. Now, sure, Alaska may be known for its snowy conditions and cold temperatures, but this is even way more snow than Juneau gets in a regular winter season.

A Record-Snowy December in One U.S. City

According to research from AccuWeather, Juneau isn't used to getting this kind of heavy snowfall. "While Alaska has a reputation for being snowy, the city of Juneau has received 79.8 inches (6.6 feet) this month, versus a historical average of 17.5 inches," Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor, says in a Jan. 2 feature. "The city only averages 87.8 inches (7.3 feet) of snow all winter, so they've had almost a season's worth of snow already."

The snow is causing dangerous conditions in the area. According to the Arctic District of the U.S. Coast Guard, boats and boat houses have collapsed in the local harbor due to the bad weather. "Heavy snow can quickly reduce stability and cause vessels to sink, leading to property damage and pollution. We are already responding to multiple sinking vessels," they announced on Facebook.

More Snow is Coming, Weather Experts Say

The good news is that the snow is about to end, but AccuWeather meteorologists say there's another winter storm system coming into the area next week bringing more of the white stuff.

"Generally drier conditions are expected over the weekend under the influence of high pressure," AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said. "However, another storm may set it's sites on the region early next week with additional snow chances."

According to the American Red Cross, to prepare for large snowfall, "Gather food, water, and medicine before a winter storm." They add that in the case of severe weather, "Stores might be closed, and it may be unsafe to travel. Organize supplies into a Go-Kit and a Stay-at-Home Kit."
