This New Tequila Ocho Release Could Change How Tequila Is Made Forever

0 1

Tequila Ocho is beloved by bartenders and drinkers for its high quality and for its commitment to showcasing the idea of terroir (place). Instead of blending away differences from batch to batch, the brand’s co-founders Carlos Camarena and the late Tomas Estes set out to celebrate the flavors of individual fields or estates of agave. One of the reasons why Tequila Ocho could do this is because Camarena is not only a legendary distiller but his family also grows agave in the Highlands of Jalisco and has deep connections in the local farming community.

The brand’s production methods remain consistent, but given the variety in sun exposure and levels of rainfall between each estate, no two batches of tequila are exactly the same. As such, every bottle of Tequila Ocho features the estate, its altitude, and the year of its respective agave harvest on its label. Even though the term “single estate” isn’t defined by the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT), the regulatory body responsible for certifying and authentifying tequila, the practice has since been adopted by other brands.

Tequila Ocho's latest collection, though, is a bit different. Dubbed the Terroir Select series, it will offer tequila made with agave plants sourced from multiple estates within one of eight designated tequila zones in the Mexican Highlands. (The zones are located in the Mexican states of Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Michoacán.)

The inaugural Terroir Select vintage, Comunidad, features agave grown by family farmers in the community of El Nacimiento de Abajo in Arandas, Jalisco — not far from Tequilera Los Alambiques (the home of Tequila Ocho). The release will consist of two expressions, a plata and a reposado, both bottled at 40 percent ABV.

“Terroir Select serves two purposes. First, it enables us to help smaller agave farmers who share our commitment to growing only the best agave on some of the best land Mexico has to offer,” Camarena said in a press release. “Second, it allows us to explore the influence that terroir of other regions in Mexico has on tequila. This helps deepen our understanding of the role terroir plays in the cultivation of blue Weber agave and, in turn, its role in tequila distilled from those agaves.”
