A “bizarre incident” on a busy highway left eight people, including a young child, “burnt to death” and dozens injured after a truck collided with at least 13 cars.
Trailer Truck Lost Control on Busy Highway
The horrific accident occurred on Nov. 8 at around 5:45 p.m. local time on the Pune-Bengaluru highway in Maharashtra, India. According to a report from The Times of India, a trailer truck bound for Mumbai lost control on the Bhumkar Bridge-Navale Bridge and hit more than a dozen vehicles. One of the cars immediately burst into flames, while another was “completely crushed” between the trailer and another truck.
Free press Journal reported that eight people were “burnt to death” in the crash. All five of the passengers traveling in the car which burst into flames died at the scene. The victims—two men, two women, and a three-year-old girl—were a family returning from a visit to temple. The driver and passenger of the trailer truck which caused the crash are also believed to be dead.
Footage posted to Instagram shows the trailer truck consumed by flames while witnesses look on. Yet more footage shows the aftermath of the devastating scene. "Pune Municipal Corporation and Fire Department have immediately reached the scene and started aid after the accident at Navale Bridge," the post’s caption reads.
The Times reported that, according to a preliminary report, the accident occurred when the trailer truck’s brakes failed while descending a steep hill. “The death toll has climbed to eight. Some of the deceased have been identified. Also, at least 20 persons were injured and undergoing treatment,” local police deputy commissioner Sambhaji Kadam told The Hindustan Times. “During the bizarre incident, a small car trapped between two trucks was completely crushed,” he added.
