The Bliss Trail: A SOTP Mass Participatory Challenge - your thoughts? please....

For those of you you have may not have come across the Bliss Trail, it is a 862 mile circumnavigation of the inland waterways in Britain.

Here is the interactive version with the links to PP

So probably not one for a quick weekend bimble.... However it kinda strikes me as a nice challenge for the SOTP collective. Seems like an entertaining way for as many of us who want to to participate/contribute independently to a common and hopefully fun objective.

Couple of options spring to mind:

a) we try and do it as a relay, where someone starts somewhere on the trail, does a pre-arranged handover of a 'baton' to someone else, and hopefully very slowly said baton makes it round the trail. Would mean the baton holder would need to be the one responsible for finding someone to hand over to, and then arrange to do the actual on-the-water meet and hand over.

b) we use this thread and anyone who happens to be paddling on the trail identifies the date, approx miles. start and end point of each section they paddle whenever they happen to be on the water. No doubt there will be some natural gaps that we may then need to make some additional 'local' effort to cover.

c) we each choose a section, and all head out over the same day/weekend to see if we can complete the circuit. I love this idea, but not sure how practical it would be. Maybe one for a later year after some collective experiences (and possibly in conjunction with lots of clubs)!

So I'm concluding b) is probably the easiest to accomplish as there is no real organisation/coordination. I’ll take the start/end points etc from the thread and add as an overlay to Members Map or similar.

I believe there will be official BC organised 'Bliss Trail' boat stickers that people will be able to lay claim to - if, I think, they have done 50 (different?) miles or more of the trail (with an erasable space on for people to write on how many miles they've done)

It is another opportunity to get some recognition/publicity for SOTP - i.e. we should be able to get coverage on both the trail website/FB page and on the BC website (if we want it), and we're probably one of a very small number of 'organisations' that are sufficiently distributed to attempt something like this.

Thoughts?
