David Haye splits with trainer Shane McGuigan

David Haye intends to continue fighting, but no longer under the guidance of Shane McGuigan.

British heavyweight David Haye has announced in a statement captured by RingTV that he will be parting ways with trainer Shane McGuigan after spending the last few years working together.

The announcement comes as Haye continues to rehabilitate from an achilles injury he suffered in his 11th round TKO loss to Tony Bellew this past March. Haye and McGuigan have been paired together since late-2015 when Haye attempted to return to boxing after nearly a four year hiatus.

Haye would cruise through two showcase fights with McGuigan in his corner before ultimately getting stopped by Bellew in what was expected to be another easy night for Haye.

“Shane and I have come to the mutual decision that when I am ready to go back into full training camp, we will no longer be working together as boxer and coach,” said Haye in an official statement.

“We remain good friends and will always metaphorically be in each other’s corner, but both parties agreed moving forward we weren’t right for each other.”

Haye continued by saying that he’s thankful to McGuigan for his service and helping him get back to where he currently is at this point in his career. Haye isn’t ready to retire for good, despite his latest injury, and says he expects to make a full recovery in the coming months.
