‘Who’s that guy?’: Canelo questions Crawford’s level of opposition
Canelo Alvarez credits Terence Crawford but says he doesn’t have the elite level experience he thinks he has.
Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford appeared on The G.O.A.T.S Podcast alongside Tom Brady and Shaquille O’Neal to promote their September 13 fight. During the segment the two fighters shared some different opinions when it was brought up that Canelo doesn’t believe Crawford’s level of opposition hasn’t touched the level he’s on, sparking a brief repartee.
“Don’t get me wrong. He’s a good fighter, a great fighter. I always say before I see him calling me out and want to fight and everything, I say before he’s a great fighter. But if you look at his career, mention one elite fighter. Just mention me one elite fighter,” Canelo said.
“So Postol wasn’t elite?” Crawford asked. “Viktor Postol.”
“Who’s that guy?” Canelo asked.
“Oh, so because he’s not commercialized he wasn’t great,” Crawford would respond. “Ricky Burns wasn’t elite?”
“A 40-years-old champion at in that moment beat Viktor Postol in my gym. I saw that,” Canelo said. “Ricky Burns wasn’t elite. Those are champions, good fighters, but elite fighters is different.”
“So I’m going to fight an elite fighter in September,” Crawford responded.
“Ok, we’re going to fight out,” said Canelo. “And don’t get me wrong, you’re a great fighter but you’re going to find out. I hope your uncle Turki Alalshikh pay you enough money because it’s going to be the last, that’s for sure.”
