Hiruta retains WBO title in US debut

Last night in California fans saw WBO female Super Flyweight champion Mizuki Hiruta (7-0, 2) [晝田瑞希] make a successful US debut, as she retained her title and scored her third defense. The pink haired Japanese fighter wasn’t in tough, but did exactly what she was supposed to do as she easily overcame 38 year old Mexican veteran Maribel Ramirez (15-11-4, 3).
From the off Hiruta looked too quick, too sharp, too big and too strong for Ramirez, who was there to win but had little to really challenge Hiruta with. The difference between the two was really apparent in round 2, when Hiruta dropped Ramirez, for the bouts only knockdown. The round had seen Ramirez being aggressive, but struggled to land as Hiruta’s defenses got a chance to shine. Later in the round Hiruta managed to catch Ramirez coming in, sending her to the canvas for the knockdown.
As the rounds went on Hiruta began to get more aggressive, giving us some very fun exchanges that saw Ramirez being forced to show her toughness. Sadly a cut to the challenger, which occurred in round 4 and was worsened by a clash of heads, saw the bout being stopped in round 7. Up to that point it had been one sided, with Hiruta proving herself to be levels above the game, but old, slow and out matched Ramirez. Ramirez did her best to make things exciting, rather than just folding, fighting back under intense pressure with her back on the ropes, but it was little more than a brave effort for the Mexican.
When the bout was stopped the scorecards came into play, with scores of 80-71, twice, and 79-72, all in favour of Hiruta.
On the same show hard hitting Kazakh fighter Ali Akhmedov (23-1, 27) [Али Багодинович Ахмедов] scored a 2nd round KO over Malcolm Jones (17-5-1, 10); whilst Filipino Mike Plania (31-5, 18) suffered a 10 round shut out loss to unbeaten American Omar Cande Trinidad (18-0-1, 13).
