Miyo Yoshida to defend IBF title in rematch against Shurretta Metcalf in October!

0 0
Over the last day or so it was announced that IBF female Bantamweight champion Miyo Yoshida (17-4) [吉田実代] would be making her first defense on October 23rd, as she looks to not only retain her title, but also avenge her most recent defeat as she rematches American fighter Shurretta Metcalf (13-4-1-1, 2), who beat her in 2023.

Yoshida won the title in a major upset last December, when she dominated popular Australian Ebanie Bridges, out working, out fighting and out boxing Bridges, who seemed lethargic throughout the contest. What made that win so remarkable was that Yoshida had been really inconsistent in recent bouts, and had typically been fighting at Super Flyweight, where she was a 2-time WBO champion who had lost the title in 2020, to Tomoko Okuda, and in 2022 to Tamao Ozawa. She had also lost to Metcalf in a 10 rounder just a month before beating Bridges.

Notably the win over Bridges saw Yoshida become a 3-time world champion, and a 2-weight champion. Sadly however she failed to build on that huge win and has not been out of the ring since December, failing to build on the momentum of her biggest win.

As for Metcalf she actually hasn’t fought since her win over Yoshida in November 2023, and it’ll be interesting to see how she’ll look after almost a year of inactivity. The win over Yoshida was been her third in a row since a No Contest with Alicia Acero in July 2022. Aside from her win over Yoshida there isn't much on her record, though she was a clear winner over the Japanese fighter, and will feel confident of repeating her win here. Despite the lack of quality on her record, credit needs to be given for the career turn around she's had after a 3-3-1 start to her professional career.

The bout will be held on a DiBella Entertainment show at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
