The first boxing gold medal in Paris has gone to Ireland’s Kellie Harrington, who also won gold in Tokyo.

Kellie Harrington of Ireland won her second straight Olympic gold medal today, outboxing China’s Yang Wenlu in the women’s 60kg (lightweight) final bout today in Paris.

Harrington also won gold in Tokyo three years ago.

Harrington won the bout 4-1, taking four scorecards at 29-28 apiece, with Yang winning the remaining card, also scored 29-28.

The gold medal also gives Ireland four overall in Paris, the first time the country has ever won more than three gold medals at the Summer Olympics. The country’s record had stood since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

The 34-year-old Harrington’s plan has been to retire after these Olympics, and if she does as expected, she goes out on top with two Olympic gold medals, something even her iconic countrywoman Katie Taylor fell short of doing back in 2016.

Bronze medals went to Wu Shih-yi of Chinese Taipei and Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil, the latter a repeat medalist after winning silver in Tokyo, with her defeats in both Olympics coming against Harrington.
